This is an idea I've had since I was little. It happened first when I was reading an encyclopedia of mythological characters and started noticing a lot of similarities between some of the gods and goddesses. Of course, some of it was inevitable with gods that covered the same domains, but others were truly uncanny. That's when the idea came to me, of researching mythological tropes and using them to create my own.
Of course, I'm not the first person to think of this. Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces", Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey", and much of the work of Carl Jung. They all discuss these ideas of tropes and archetypes across older storytelling, and how it continues even into contemporary works. When I first conceived of the idea, I didn't have too many resources at my disposal beyond the internet, so it remained an idea.
I now find myself a university student, after years aimlessly existing in the workforce. I am inundated with resources, teachers, colleagues, and at least one friend who has already completed an MA in screenwriting. Now is the time to bring it to fruition. It is also my hope that through this journey I will improve my own writing skills.
Of course, before we go on this journey properly we will need to gain a foundation. In the coming weeks, I will be reading the works of others who have explored this idea. The previously mentioned Campbell, Vogler, and Jung specifically. Join me next time when I have had my meeting with the mentors.
